The bodies of two female hikers have been discovered in a remote alpine area of Victoria’s high country.
Emergency services were called just before 1pm on Friday after two other hikers stumbled across the grim scene near Cleve Cole Hut, close to Lendenfeld Point at Nelse.
The hikers called Triple Zero, with police officers, the Search and Rescue Squad, and the police Air Wing quickly deployed to the isolated region.
The two women, believed to be aged in their 20s or 30s, are yet to be formally identified.
Detectives believe they may have travelled to the picturesque alpine country to hike and camp.
Police said there are currently no reports of missing women in the area and are now appealing to the public for any information that may assist in identifying the pair.
Because of the difficult conditions and isolation of the scene, specialist officers will remain camped at the site overnight.
The bodies are expected to be retrieved on Saturday.
At this stage, investigators do not believe the deaths are suspicious.
Police say the incident is not related to the search for alleged gunman Dezi Freeman, who has been missing since August 26.
Freeman was last spotted in Porepunkah, around 70km from Nelse.
