Daughter’s Sketchbook Offers New Insight into 13-Year-Old Disappearance at Guadalupe Peak

Samuel Jones and his daughter Simone disappeared in 2000 after setting out to enjoy the stars atop Guadalupe Peak. Simone hoped to sketch the Milky Way, but the planned call from the summit never came.

Despite wide search efforts, no clues appeared except their truck and their names recorded at the trailhead. Life carried on for Simone’s mother, Eleanor, who kept the last sketchbook safe.

In 2013, hikers found a hidden tent with remains and Simone’s drawings, including a strange figure named Caleb. Police connected the name to a man who moved away years earlier but found no proof of wrongdoing.

The official cause of their deaths remains unknown, and some wonder if initial assumptions hindered a fuller inquiry.

Eleanor now shares their story to encourage thoroughness in searches and honor her children’s memories.

Their journey remains an unsolved mystery but one filled with spirit, love, and unanswered questions lingering in the West Texas wild.
