Thomas Beatie made history as the world’s first transgender man to carry and give birth to a child sixteen years ago. Born in 1974 as Tracy in Hawaii, Thomas transitioned to male but kept the ability to become pregnant.
The birth of his daughter Susan attracted global attention, and Thomas endured threats and discrimination alike. Yet, he remained strong and shared his truth to advocate for transgender people’s rights.
Identifying as male from age ten, Thomas started hormone therapy at 23 and legally changed his gender in 2002, but stopped testosterone in 2006 to conceive.
His family grew with multiple pregnancies before he and his then-wife Nancy raised their children as a close-knit family.
In 2008, he appeared on Oprah, sharing that parenthood is a human desire beyond gender boundaries.
In 2016, he married Amber, joining their family with children and a grandchild, now living in Oregon.
Thomas works as a stockbroker while occasionally speaking on transgender issues and acting.
He acknowledges that his story helped many understand fertility and gender identity in new ways.
Reflecting on his journey, Thomas is proud of breaking barriers and showing the diverse paths families can take.
