It’s June, which means Pride month is still in full effect. Starz series P Valley was looking to give fans a true experience when they featured a very graphic and extended clip of breakout star J. Alphonse Nicholson and actor John Clarence Stewart. While many have voiced their opinions on the scene, cast members have also come forward to shut down any negativity and express how important the scene was to the show, their characters, and their audience.
P. Valley is an American drama television series created by Katori Hall. It premiered on July 12th, 2020, right in the thick of the pandemic, and was an instant hit with fans, being renewed for a second season only two weeks into its inaugural season. P-Valley received much critical acclaim and garnered nominations from the GLAAD Media Awards, Independent Spirit Awards, TCA Awards, and the NAACP Image Awards. With the state of the world being what it was, it delayed the premiere of the show’s second season.
Finally, fans got to return to their favorite strip club in the Mississippi Delta on June 3rd, 2022. Season 2 has yet to disappoint and is already scoring rave reviews from fans. Much of the original cast returned, including Brandee Evans, Nicco Annan, Shannon Thornton, and J. Alphonse Nicholson.
Since the very first season of P Valley, there has been a lot of scrutiny about the character of Lil Murda. The aspiring rapper becomes Uncle Clifford’s love interest early on in the show. This was controversial because Uncle Clifford is a non-binary character while Lil Murda plays up the DL thug stereotype. As the show explores more of Murda’s backstory in season 2, it is being revealed that he is also attracted to men and has a deep connection to Character Big Teak, played by John Clarence Stewart.
In a recent scene, it was revealed that their connection is romantic as they engaged in a very graphic scene. The internet went crazy the moment it aired. While some applauded P Valley for displaying black love between two masculine-presenting men, others thought it was a step way too far. One person summarized the drama by saying, “[Ya’ll] complaining bout P Valley as if the main character isn’t a grown man wit a lace front, you knew what the show was… You expected it to be Paid n Full?”
Comedian Lil Duval took to his Twitter to vent, saying that he does not feel homophobic for not wanting to see gay men have be intimate on TV. “And that’s not homophoic cuz I feel the same way about my momma. I can watch my momma, but I don’t wanna see her [expletive] Do y’all get it?” People agreed with him in the comments saying, “Totally Agree!! These shows doing wayyy to much.. We all know what Gay means.”
For the actor behind Lil Murda, all the discourse is proof that he is doing a good job in his role. Seemingly responding to Lil Duval and others, J. Alphonse Nicholson took to Twitter to thank them for bringing so much attention to his role. “The love is real the hate is real. As an actor, the ultimate goal is to be as believable as possible. Relax, precise, fierce.” He continued with, “Although @PValleySTARZ is a fictional story, I’m grateful for the real conversations that are being had. Job well done. #PValleyStarz #LILMURDA #steadygrind.”
P. Valley Writer, Patrik-Ian Polk also caught wind of Lil Duval’s comment and took to Twitter to tell the comedian ‘This show is not for you… find something else to watch.” According to Polk, he was a writer on the latest episode that has made a lot of people uncomfortable. However, the writer encourages anyone who is offended or disgusted to step away from Chucalissa.
